On paper, the Indiana Pacers have improved from last season. They added Tyreke Evans, a far superior creator, to take the place of Lance Stephenson. There is more frontcourt depth with Kyle O’Quinn ready to mop up whatever center minutes don’t go to Domantas Sabonis and Myles Turner and more shooting around the perimeter with the additions of Aaron Holiday and Doug McDermott. However, the results the Pacers posted last year may have been better than the team actually was on paper.

Indiana won three more games than would have been expected, given their point differential, and they were aided by some possibly unsustainable clutch performances. For Indiana to build on what they did last year, they’ll need to improve and stave off any regression from those overperformances. The good news is that, in addition to their depth, some small changes like better spacing and shot selection could allow them to get a lot more out of the pieces they have.
