3. Pressure piles on Wagner as Huddersfield lose to Liverpool

The later kickoff on Saturday sees one of the Premier League title contenders, Liverpool, travel to face Huddersfield in a match that looks like it will end one way. The Terriers did well to stay up last season, but have struggled this term with only three points on the board so far.

Huddersfield manager David Wagner knows that his side need to start performing if they’re to remain in the division, but also if he wants to keep his job. The German has done well with them but the club may look in a different direction soon.

A loss against Liverpool shouldn’t see Wagner out of a job, but a positive result would certainly ease the pressure. A good performance against the Reds could give them the confidence to go on a bit of a run and pick up some points.

Huddersfield do have the ability to play and can maybe feel a little unlucky to only have three points this season. On Saturday, they’ll hope to sit in and frustrate Liverpool, whose attack hasn’t been at its best.

It’s likely Liverpool will score whether Huddersfield sit deep or not, and if they do then Wagner’s team will need to chase the game in order to get something out of it. That will lead to more space and more goals for a Liverpool side that thrive on quick counter-attacks into these open spaces.

Wagner should encourage his players to go out and take the game to Liverpool, who aren’t as confident as they might have been three weeks ago after their 1-1 draw at Stamford Bridge. That seems unlikely, though, and Huddersfield will lose this match with fans beginning to question Wagner’s future at the club.
