The New York Jets nabbed their next head coach this past week, and they did not have to look far to find him. In fact, the Jets signed former Miami Dolphins head coach Adam Gase to a new contract, and he will be tasked with getting the most out of Sam Darnold, the team’s first round pick in 2018.

Darnold played very well in stretches during his rookie season, and will be counted on to be the franchise quarterback this organization has not had in a very long time. In fact, outside of Chad Pennington, there has been no true franchise guy to speak of since Joe Namath, who led the team to their only Super Bowl title 50 years ago.

When it comes time for the Jets to draft in the first round in 2019, the have the No. 3 overall pick for the second year in a row, and should focus the selection on protecting Darnold. While Jonah Williams did not have a great showing in the national title game against Clelin Ferrell and the Clemson Tigers defensive line, he is the best offensive tackle this draft class has to offer.

In fact, Williams is going to be an elite tackle at the NFL level, and the Jets would be wise to invest as much as they can in protecting Darnold moving forward. Darnold is the kind of quarterback you can really build a roster around, and with a quarterback guru like Gase at the helm, you have to think things are looking up in Jets land.
