Willie Cauley-Stein might not be available at the deadline. He’s started every game for the Kings this year. He’s averaging a career-high in rebounds and points as he heads towards restricted free agency. Cauley-Stein is a good player and the Kings haven’t always had a lot of those. Plus, as a restricted free agent, Sacramento will have the leverage to re-sign him at a fair number. Why give that up?

That being said, it’s fair to wonder if the Kings really need Cauley-Stein. They drafted Marvin Bagley III at No. 2 overall last June and he’s going to be most effective in the modern NBA playing the five. Off the bench, Harry Giles is showing flashes and is playing like he is a useful big if he can stay healthy. So, maybe Cauley-Stein will be available for the right price.

None of the players the Mavericks have, though, would seem to appeal the Kings — it’s not as easy as trading a surplus young wing for a surplus young big. As a result, the Mavericks, Kings and Wizards could do a three-team deal where the Kings get a player they tried to sign before and reportedly have interest in: Otto Porter Jr. In exchange, the Mavs get Cauley-Stein — and could re-sign him this summer — and the Wizards get a protected pick from the Mavericks.
