Los Angeles Chargers free agency 2019: top 5 targets
3. Rodger Saffold, OG Los Angeles Rams
Yes, every team can use help on the offensive line. However, the Chargers desperately need the help. According to the final rankings by Pro Football Focus, the Chargers’ offensive line ranked 30th in the league.
Veterans Russell Okung, Mike Pouncey and Michael Schofield anchored the team’s offensive line. Other players were cycled through the line, but Dan Feeney and Sam Tevi are two players that notably under preformed. Meaning, they are two players that the team should look to move on from in free agency.
The Chargers shouldn’t look to hand a long-term, expensive deal to any free agent offensive lineman. Rather, they should bring in a veteran on a short-term deal to ensure financial flexibility for the future.
One player than may fit that mold is Rodger Saffold. Of course, he has been a mainstay on the Rams’ offensive line for nine years, but he will become a free agent this offseason.
Feeney played left guard and Tevi moved between tackle positions in 2018. Well, those are positions Saffold has experience playing.
In Saffold’s career, he has played right guard, right tackle, left tackle and his most recent position of left guard. He would be an instant upgrade, and he was highly ranked as a member of one of the best offensive lines in the NFL in 2018.
Saffold is 30 going on 31. But, in nine seasons, six of those years the team has had a 1,000+ yard rusher. He would provide muscle inside, which would benefit Rivers and the rushing game mightily.
