2019 NFL Draft: Indianapolis Colts 7-round mock
By Joe Romano
Round 1 – Pick 26
Taylor Rapp, S, Washington
An area where the Colts roster looks like they overachieved was in the defensive secondary. Former first round pick Malik Hooker is coming into his own as a rangy safety on the back-end. Indianapolis paired him with veterans who look unlikely to return to the team. Clayton Geathers, Mike Mitchell and J.J. Wilcox were all brought in to play that strong safety role. That is a position Indianapolis should look to upgrade early in the draft.
For that spot, give me Washington safety Taylor Rapp. Rapp is a riser in this draft class, though he’s been a big name in scouting for some time. A secondary that also featured first round corner Byron Murphy, was led by Rapp. While slightly miscast at Washington, his best role is around the box and being almost a “small linebacker” in sub packages.
Rapp’s skill set of attacking the line of scrimmage, making plays in the short area and basically always being around the ball would pair well with Hooker. While Hooker thrives in the deep zone with otherworldly ball skills, Rapp struggles in those areas. The two would compliment each other perfectly and give the Colts a foundation at the safety tandem to go with their rising defense.
Other areas to consider here are wide receiver, edge rusher and interior defensive lineman. Those three positions may be the deepest in the class. Indianapolis would be wise to snag a blue chip player like Rapp and let the draft come to them.
