Round 2 – Pick 34

Dre’Mont Jones, DT, Ohio State

A smart piece of draft day maneuvering last year led the Colts to the second pick in the second round. This was the price the Jets paid to move up and grab quarterback Sam Darnold. Indianapolis also owned the Jets pick last year and turned it into Defensive Rookie of the Year Darius Leonard. Ballard nailed all four of his second round picks a year ago and gets two shots this year.

The first one he swings on a defensive tackle who could immediately help the interior of this defense. Dre’mont Jones is a bit of a forgotten man in this exceptional defensive lineman class. Jones is a versatile defensive tackle who works best at the 3-technique where he can use his quickness and explosion to shoot gaps. His get off and pass rush techniques will get him consideration as a big edge, similar to his former teammate Tyquan Lewis, who the Colts drafted last year.

Jones will need to put on some strength if he wants to be an every down contributor for the Colts. Right now his best role is a rusher on second and third down where a pass is likely. Even at 295 pounds he gets bullied inside due to a lack of anchor.

With Al Woods and Margus Hunt hitting free agency there are holes to fill in the middle of this defense. Coordinator Matt Eberflus is not afraid of undersized guys taking on bigger roles. Jones and Lewis for that matter, could be his Tyrone Crawford who he coached in Dallas. They possess similar size but Crawford increased his play strength when asked to kick inside. Should Jones follow suit he would be an impact player for a front seven that could use a few.
