Round 2 – Pick 58

J.J. Arcega-Whiteside

Another shot for Ballard to grab a starting caliber player is with the Colts own second round pick. This time the focus comes to the offensive side of the ball. With a quarterback and offensive line in place, it’s time to add skill position players to this group. Indianapolis has a pair of exciting tight ends in Jack Doyle and Eric Ebron. Receiver T.Y. Hilton is the only player on the outside that strikes fear in any defense.

Not anymore when the Colts snag Stanford’s J.J. Arcega-Whiteside. The red zone machine from Stanford is coming off a 14 touchdown performance which was a year removed from nine touchdowns. The guy knows how to find the end zone.  While the red zone is where he goes most of his damage, he is more than just a jump ball specialist. Despite not being the fastest guy, Arcega-Whiteside is a nuanced route runner who can win all over the field.

The deep speed issue is real, but with Hilton across from him, that is a small concern. Arcega-Whiteside would be a great compliment to the weapons in place. If he can improve his run after catch ability, a negative at this point, he could be a high-end second option in a passing attack. A foursome of Hilton, Doyle, Ebron and Arcega-Whiteside can create mismatches all over the field while not forcing the Colts to spread out a defense. This would be a great selection that can change an offense.
