Round 3 – Pick 89

Vosean Joseph, LB, Florida

As already discussed, Indianapolis and Chris Ballard hit a home run in Day 2 with back-to-back picks that led to the NFL’s leading tackler and a starting right tackle. Darius Leonard is now the focal point of the linebacker group but it’s a unit that could use an influx of talent. Opposite Leonard the Colts played Anthony Walker and Najee Good. That latter of which is a pending free agent.

Drafting Vosean Joseph from Florida would give them another piece to add to their collection of linebackers. Joseph is similar to Leonard in the fact that his speed and athleticism are their best strength. Where Leonard differentiates himself from the former Gator is with his consistency. Joseph is the type of player that depending on the game you watch you see either a elite linebacker prospect or an undrafted free agent. As always the truth is somewhere in between.

In Matt Eberflus defense, Joseph and Leonard would be a pair of rangy linebackers who can play in sub packages given their ability to get sideline to sideline. Neither player may have the prototypical size of a MIKE linebacker but if Leonard can play like he did his rookie year, the two can share the same space despite both being better cast as a weak side player.

Joseph would give the Colts an exciting traits style prospect who can build on his career at Florida. The coaching staff, if they are able to get through to him, are working with a solid foundation. In a weak linebacker class Joseph at least presents upside to be excited about at this point in the draft.
