The Baltimore Ravens release of Eric Weddle creates a unique opportunity for someone else to land a veteran playmaker.

Looking across the league at the different depth chart you can find a lot of teams that need help at the safety position. Those teams will most likely look to the free agent market to address this specific need. Eric Weddle’s addition to the field came as a bit of a surprise.

The 2019 NFL Draft doesn’t feature a very strong safety group. It especially doesn’t feature an elite talent like Derwin James who was drafted by the Los Angeles Chargers last year.

This year’s free agent market does have several intriguing players at the safety position. The biggest name is Landon Collins who was surprising allowed to hit the open market when the New York Giants decided against using the franchise tag.

He is joined by Earl Thomas, Adrian Amos, Ha Ha Clinton-Dix, Kenny Vaccaro and Lamarcus Joyner. Weddle also belongs to be mention with that group. He maybe on the older side, but Weddle showed last year that he’s still capable of making an impact.

It’s possible that Weddle is one of the first players at this position to find a new home. His age will keep his salary demands within a reasonable range. There are several safety needy teams who are working with tight salary cap space.

Those teams would be smart to get a jump on the market and try to bring Weddle on board before free agency even begins.
