3. Buffalo’s defense gets some support

In 2018, the Bills were basically operating with half of a football team.

Look at the numbers, and you’ll see one of the better defense in the NFL. As mentioned earlier in the piece, Buffalo has some real players on that side of the ball ranging from Tre’Davious White and Jerry Hughes to linebacker Matt Milano and safety Micah Hyde. The result was a unit that finished second-overall.

However, the offense went out and ranked 30th in yardage. While it wasn’t exactly expected to be a juggernaut, the unit struggled even more than expected, starting the year with Nathan Peterman under center and then moving to rookie Josh Allen. The results were predictable, with Buffalo often struggling to find the end zone more than once in a game.

At some point, general manager Brandon Beane had to take a chance and make a move. Landing Brown was certainly one of the biggest he could have made, far bigger than anything that appears available in free agency or the draft. It’s risky considering Brown wants more guaranteed money and can be volatile, but it’s also the kind of moves that can change franchises.
