Xavien Howard

This one may come as a slight surprise. Xavien Howard has said nothing except that he wants to be a franchise player for the Miami Dolphins. He’s the type of player new head coach Brian Flores can build around for a decade. However, if feels like if the Dolphins and Howard were going to come to an agreement on an extension, it might have happened already.

Howard said that he wants the richest contract ever for a cornerback. Right now, he’s set to make just under $2 million on the last year of his rookie deal. That might be the best contract in football. However, Howard doesn’t want to play for that price. He wants a major extension signed tomorrow if he could have it.

Josh Norman is currently the highest-paid cornerback in the league. He’s making $15 million per year on a five-year deal with Washington. It sounds like Howard won’t be happy until he’s making something in the range of five years and $80 million. Are the Dolphins willing to go there? If not, it makes much more sense to trade him away. The Dolphins may not compete for a few seasons. Is it worth it to spend $16+ million on the best years of Howard when the team won’t compete?

It could be better to get another first-round pick, and possibly more for one of the top corners in the league.
