Jalen Ramsey

Speaking of top cornerbacks in the league and getting paid, Jalen Ramsey fits the bill. The loud mouth of the Jacksonville Jaguars defense, Ramsey himself is going into the last year of his rookie deal. Since he was a fifth-overall pick, he gets over $7 million this season before hitting a fifth-year option.

Ramsey said publicly that he wants to sign an extension with Jacksonville, but there are issues the Jaguars have to address. Next season, they aren’t expected to have a ton of cap space before signing Ramsey. They just gave Nick Foles $22 million per season while releasing Blake Bortles. They will likely have around $5 million in dead cap on Bortles, then another $4 million in dead cap for recently-released Malik Jackson.

Can the Jaguars conceivably add another $16 million to that cap number? No chance Ramsey takes less than Howard is looking to get, and for completely different reasons he may have to look elsewhere to get it. There are still a ton of teams with a lot of cap space, so there will be teams calling for Ramsey’s services.

Sure, Ramsey talks too much, but he backs it up in a big way on the field. However, it’s when those skills diminish that they have to pay for those words. Ramsey is in a place where he can still cash the checks his mouth writes. Just don’t expect him to get traded to the Buffalo Bills.
