NFL Draft 2019: Los Angeles Chargers full NFL mock draft
By Joe Romano
Round 1 – Pick 28
Jerry Tillery, DT, Notre Dame
Los Angeles made a smart decision in keeping defensive tackle Brandon Mebane around this offseason. The interior of their defensive line struggled all year and is keeping their talented pass rushers from reaching their full potential. Mebane gives them a big body in the middle to stuff some rushing attacks. A penetrating, pass rushing three technique beside him would do wonders for this defense.
Notre Dame’s Jerry Tillery is the perfect player to fill that role at the back end of the first round. Tillery is coming off an impressive senior season after his previous ones were filled with inconsistency. He still shows some lack of consistency but it was much improved this past year where he proved he can be a dominant inside pass rusher.
In today’s NFL where pressure up the middle is just as important as off the edges, a guy like Tillery’s value is sky high. Given how well he progressed in his final season, it is safe to assume his best football may be in front of him. His athleticism displayed at the combine should secure his status as a top-40 pick. Los Angeles would be wise to grab a penetrating player like Tillery to complete their defensive line.
Other positions that could be discussed here for the Chargers are wide receiver, linebacker or offensive line. Tillery was the best available player at this point and was an easy pick for a team with a need at his exact position.
