Ron Burgundy tried his hand at hockey play by play for Kings-Sharks
Typically a news man, and a newly minted podcaster, Ron Burgundy took a turn at hockey play-by-play Thursday night.
A noted fictional San Diego-based newsman, with his last movie appearance coming over five years ago, Ron Burgundy has ventured into modern media with a newly launched podcast. But Will Ferrell brought perhaps his most famous character to the sports world Thursday night, with a turn doing play-by-play for the Los Angeles Kings-San Jose Sharks game.
Burgundy stepped into the booth with Alex Faust and Jim Fox in time for the second period. He explained his late arrival to the “Stapless Center”, as he thought the Kings still played at the Forum. The Kings last played the Forum in 1999.
The relatively continuous action of hockey, and line changes, can make play-by-play a great challenge for an unpolished or inexperienced broadcaster. With no teleprompter to invite a profane mistake, Burgundy did just fine pretty much on the fly.

Burgundy savaged the Sharks for having no Stanley Cups.
And right on cue, less than a minute later, Sharks forward Tomas Hertl scored a goal, with Burgundy astutely pointing out “that wasn’t supposed to happen.” #Announcerjinx firmly in play.
Burgundy seems to know way too much about the epic beard sported by Sharks’ veteran center Joe Thornton.
Burgundy also has some insider knowledge about the off-ice hobbies of Martin Jones. Apparently, the San Jose goaltender is a puppeteer during the offseason.

Even without goal to use it on during the second period, let alone a Kings’ tally to use it on, Burgundy offered his idea for a goal call-“Put that baby to bed without a diaper.”

Of course Burgundy had to eat a burrito with a glass of milk on the air, with a kiss cam appearance to fully profess his love for the burrito.

The Kings went on to score three goals in the third period to come away with a 4-2 win Thursday night. No one will remember the result of the game, but Burgundy’s turn at play-by-play will live in infamy.
