Round 1 – Pick 10

T.J. Hockenson, TE, Iowa

A mock draft where Drew Lock does not go to Denver in Round 1? Yes, that is this mock draft. Lock was the top option at quarterback available. Foolishly or not, I’m choosing to believe John Elways’ proclamation that he is all-in on Joe Flacco. If that is the case, and Elway needs to win to keep his job, this pick will be more about the present than the future.

A player that can fit both paths is Iowa tight end T.J. Hockenson. The best tight end prospect in recent memory, Hockenson would be an ideal addition to the new Denver offense. Coordinator Rich Scangarello comes from San Francisco where he saw a fellow Iowa tight end, George Kittle, be a dynamic piece of an offense. Hockenson’s a great comparison for Kittle and would setle nicely in that role in Denver.

The current tight end depth chart features resigned Jeff Heuermann, and the young duo of Jake Butt and Troy Fumagali. Butt’s been injured since coming into the league, though he has upside. Fumagali was a rookie last year after being drafted in the fifth round and did not see a single snap.

Bringing Hockenson into the mix would give Denver an elite receiving threat at the position. He’s also an incredible blocker at the position. There may not be a more complete player at his respective position in this draft than Hockenson.

There are positions that Denver could address here instead of tight end. Unfortunately both Devin Bush and Devin White were off the board, leaving no linebackers remaining. Both players would have been the pick if available. Don’t be shocked to see Houston defensive tackle Ed Oliver here if available. Fangio could use a dominant interior rusher, especially with the deadly edge duo already on the roster.
