Shelton Benjamin to NXT

The word potential has always hovered around Shelton Benjamin. Despite being a two-time WWE Tag Team Champion, a former WWE United States Champion and a three-time WWE Intercontinental Champion, fans always believed Benjamin was capable of more. These days the same fans that one likely championed championship opportunity for Benjamin now clamor for something much more ordinary: screen time.

At this stage in his career, singles pushes on the main roster are out of reach for the former “Gold Standard.” However, as his match against Seth Rollins clearly demonstrated last month, Benjamin is far from washed just yet. This is why WWE needs to take advantage of what they have in this unique veteran and send him to NXT.

NXT is traditionally viewed as the feeder system to the larger brands, with Superstars getting promoted upwards and not the other way around. But NXT today isn’t what it was a few years ago. Yes, it’s still WWE’s developmental arm, but it’s full of performers with exceptional pedigrees and consistently cranks out some of WWE’s finest content. Let Benjamin contribute to the next generation, while simultaneously demonstrating what he still has left in the tank. Benjamin could put on a show against NXT performers like The Velveteen Dream and Matt Riddle, and, as an established veteran, makes a credible challenger for any up-and-comer.

If NXT is the Triple-A of WWE, let Benjamin be its Crash Davis and show the newcomers the ropes while knocking out some home runs.
