3. Ed Oliver will jump into the top six

Oliver has had a really strange pre-draft process. Early in the college season, he was widely regarded as the best defensive lineman in this class. Many NFL scouts and media members thought he had a real chance to go No. 1 overall. Unfortunately, issues with his coaching staff at Houston combined with some uneven effort on the field caused his draft stock to plummet as the season progresses.

Curiously, it seems to be on the rise again as the draft approaches. It’s really not a surprise given Oliver’s obvious physical gifts. If you were drafting on talent alone he’d easily be in contention to go No. 1 overall.

He’s not going to climb back into the top two, but he’s got a real chance to work his way back into the mix for teams making the next four selections. The Jets have the third pick and are looking for a pass rusher. Oliver can absolutely do that. The same can be said about the Raiders at No. 4. Tampa Bay has the next pick and they might want to find a replacement for Gerald McCoy on the inside. Oliver fits well there.

Lastly, the Giants and Gettleman can never be counted on when it comes to picking a defensive lineman. Their fans are desperate for a quarterback, but they could easily see Oliver headed to the Big Apple instead.

Most mocks are going to project Oliver outside the top 10, but don’t be surprised if a team in the top six falls in love with him on Draft Day.
