NFL Draft: 3 teams best suited to make trades
By Jordan Foote
2. Oakland Raiders
Oakland has as many options as any team in the entire NFL ahead of this year’s draft. Now in Year 2 under head coach Jon Gruden, one of the league’s most historic franchises seeks to execute an expedited rebuild after 2017 and ’18 seasons which saw the club go 6-10 and 4-12.
Adding a pair of first-round picks as a result of the Khalil Mack and Amari Cooper trades, new general manager Mike Mayock can’t complain about not having anything to work with once Thursday night rolls around. Here’s where things stand as of right now:
- Round 1: 4, 24, 27 overall
- Round 2: 35 overall
The Raiders also hold a pair of seventh-round selections, but those are unlikely to carry much weight at all in a negotiation situation. With four chances to add an immediate impact player in the first 35 picks of the draft, Oakland can do some serious damage here.
Although it has certainly been well-documented that some may not be 100% confident in Gruden/Mayock’s plan come draft night, that also presents the concept of choice. Because there have been so many reports about what Oakland plans to do through the end of the week, no one is truly certain about what those plans are.
Is Derek Carr the quarterback of the future? That question should be answered in the first round. Will the Raiders’ brass decide to address the defensive line or the secondary first? Could one or more of the first-round picks be on the move? With so many potential moving parts, keep an eye on Oakland on Thursday.
