When is the Preakness Stakes 2019?
By Staff
Now that the Kentucky Derby has given us a winner, it’s on to the next big race on this potential Triple Crown journey.
It seemed like not that long ago the idea of seeing a Triple Crown winner in horse racing was way out there. Not since the 1970s had we watched the sports world become captivated by a horse, but twice in the last decade the seemingly impossible feat was accomplished.
Will there be one more horse adding its name to what could end up being the strongest Triple Crown decade ever?
That’s the question on everyone’s mind as Maximum Security celebrates its victory at the Kentucky Derby. American Pharaoh and Justify both were able to use wins at the Derby to catapult them to the highest heights in horse racing.
It’s also not the first — nor the last — time a horse will have won the Derby and then fizzled out. We are guaranteed to get ourselves drunk on the idea of a Triple Crown winner each year as no matter who wins the Derby they get pegged as a potential superstar.
So while it’s happened far more often this decade than we ever thought it would, there are no promises to be made.
That being said, the next big race we’re all circling is the Preakness Stakes. It’s the second leg in the Triple Crown, which will conclude with the Belmont Stakes in June. Winning the Derby is a given in that we’re always going to have a reason to watch the Preakness and see if the streak can be kept alive.
But winning the Preakness is both incredibly difficult to do and one of the biggest teases to fans hoping to see something special happen.
The Preakness Stakes will be run two weeks from now, on May 18th.
