Bruce Arena hired by New England Revolution as coach
With the worst record in the Eastern Conference, the New England Revolution are bringing Bruce Arena back to MLS.
The New England Revolution are dead-last in the Eastern Conference of MLS right now, with a 3-2-8 record (11 points), the most goals allowed in the conference (31) and the worst goal differential (minus-17) in the entire league. So change is needed, and on Tuesday morning the team announced the hiring of Bruce Arena as coach and sporting director.
The Revolution dismissed coach Brad Friedel and general manager Mike Burns within the past week. Friedel had a 12-21-13 record over one-plus seasons, with his only previous head coaching experience coming in charge of the U.S. under-19 men’s national team. Burns played five seasons for the Revs, and was in his eighth season as general manager.
Arena has been out of work since leaving the U.S. men’s national team after its failure to reach the 2018 World Cup. But the 67-year-old has won five MLS Cups — two with D.C. United and three with the LA Galaxy — and is a three-time MLS Coach of the Year. Arena also previously coached the New York Red Bulls in MLS.

Revolution investor/operator Robert Kraft offered a statement on the hiring of Arena.
"Bruce is one of the most successful coaches in American soccer history, and we feel his commitment to excellence, track record of winning championships in Major League Soccer, as well as his success at the international level, makes him the best person to bring the Revolution back to MLS Cup contention, We have known Bruce dating back to the advent of MLS, and we have full confidence that he will raise the level of our club to the standard we all expect and demand.”"
The Revolution are hosting Chelsea for a friendly on Wednesday night, and Arena will be formally introduced at a news conference on Thursday. His first game as New England coach will be Saturday on the road against Montreal, with his first home game against D.C. United on May 25.
