5. Isaiah Wynn, OT

Last offseason, Bill Belichick made a call to the San Francisco 49ers about their offensive tackle Trent Brown, which resulted in the Pats and Niners making a trade that sent Brown to New England.

Brown was inconsistent during his time in the Bay Area, but he became a stalwart on the Patriots offensive line in 2019. He helped the team clinch the Super Bowl title, but the Oakland Raiders lured him away in free agency.

Now, the Patriots will lean on second-year player Isaiah Wynn to take over and presumably play the left tackle spot with Marcus Cannon at right tackle.

Wynn was taken with the 23rd-overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft out of Georgia. Unfortunately, he suffered a season-ending Achilles injury prior to the season, missing his rookie year.

Now, as Wynn works his way back to being fully healthy, he will be one of the most important players for the Patriots this season. Playing tackle in the NFL is already a critical job. But playing left tackle and having to protect Tom Brady’s blind spot is even tougher.

The Patriots just recently signed veteran Jared Veldheer to a one-year deal to serve as depth, but Wynn will be looked at as the starter. Providing stability and controlling the line of scrimmage is a must for the Patriots and keeping Brady off his back dictates most of the team’s success.
