Pepe Reina

Following the arrival of Alisson at the start of the season and Loris Karius’ subsequent loan to Besiktas, Simon Mignolet has spent more time minding the substitutes’ bench than Liverpool’s goal. Alisson’s record-breaking form dictates that that position is unlikely to change any time soon and Mignolet will look to move on in search of regular game time.

Karius will not return to Liverpool before seeing out his two-year loan spell in Turkey which leaves the club with only Caoimhin Kelleher as an understudy to Alisson. The 20-year-old was recently called up to the Republic of Ireland national team but Jurgen Klopp is unlikely to place his trust in a largely untested player.

Instead, he’ll likely turn to an experienced hand to provide cover in the goalkeeping department. One such option is a player Liverpool fans will be familiar with, Pepe Reina. The Spaniard is the back-up keeper at A.C. Milan these days but spent a decade at Anfield between 2005 and 2014, winning the Golden Glove three times.

Now 36, Reina has no intention of hanging up his gloves despite seeing limited game time this season. He featured regularly in Milan’s Europa League campaign but predominantly served as cover for the club’s teenage sensation, Gianluigi Donnarumma.

His best years are behind him but Reina remains a quality keeper and is still fondly remembered by the club’s supporters. He would bring with him a wealth of experience and is still more than able to perform when called upon. Importantly, he’s also unlikely to command a major transfer fee or demand regular game-time which makes him an ideal backup.
