Denzel Dumfries

After Nathaniel Clyne joined Bournemouth in January, Klopp deployed Joe Gomez and James Milner as make-shift cover at right-back. It’s a situation that’s unlikely to persist into next season, with Gomez set to return to his preferred central role and Milner’s future still undecided. Clyne is also not expected to return from his loan which means Liverpool will need to strengthen in the position.

One player who has excelled in that role is Denzel Dumfries. The Dutch international has enjoyed a steady rise in his homeland, winning the Eerste Divisie Talent of the Year award in 2016 with Sparta Rotterdam before joining PSV Eindhoven after a year at Heerenveen.

This season, he was an ever-present as the club narrowly missed out on the Eredivisie title to Ajax, chipping in with four goals along the way. He was also named in the league’s team of the season.

Much like the aforementioned Sessegnon, Dumfries possesses the attacking qualities required by Liverpool of their full-backs, with added defensive reliability. The 23-year-old is a dynamic defender who is as comfortable going forward as he is in defense, and possesses the end-to-end athleticism needed to keep pace with the club’s high tempo style of play.

PSV will reluctant to sell one of their star men, particularly as they stand to lose the likes of Hirving Lozano and Steven Bergwijn as well, but for the right price Liverpool would be able to land a player who would bring a load to quality to the squad.
