Jacksonville coach Doug Marrone indicates that new starting quarterback Nick Foles may be having a family-related issue.
Jacksonville quaterback Nick Foles, who joined the team this offseason as a free agent, is out of the Jaguars offseason training program for an indefinite time, the team said Tuesday.
Jaguars coach Doug Marrone said Foles would be away and didn’t give a timetable for his return to the team. However, the NFL Network said Foles could be back by the end of the week and Marrone said he sent his “thoughts and prayers” to Foles and his family over the issue.
Foles signed a four-year, $88 million contract, including $50.125 million guaranteed. Foles received that deal after helping the Eagles win the Super Bowl in the 2017 season and helping them get back to the playoffs this past season. To that point, Foles had been on a journeyman track in the NFL and even considered retiring after being let go by the Los Angeles Rams in 2016.
Foles’ contract is the richest free agent contract in team history. Aside from the travails of his career, Foles’ wife has dealt with her own issues. A year ago, his wife Tori Moore was disagnosed with postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS). Foles and his wife have spoken as conferences about the disorder.
Moore told CNN a year ago that she was initially misdiagnosed.
“They told me I had a virus,” Moore said, “but I had never heard of one where you are dizzy all the time. There were times I couldn’t get out of bed.”
The disorder effects involuntary functions, such as digestion, breathing and heart rate.
“It was tough for me because I was still healthy,” Foles told CNN, “and I could see what she was going through. But she’s amazing, and we’ve grown closer together.”
