3. Dallas Cowboys

Right or wrong, Cowboys’ owner Jerry Jones is making Jason Garrett coach out the final year of his contract as a lame-duck in 2019.

That plan to make Garrett coach out his contract worked well previously, as the Cowboys went 12-4 in 2014 and would have gone to the NFC Championship Game if not for the infamous Dez Bryant catch being overturned against the Green Bay Packers.

If Garrett stays in place as the head coach in Dallas beyond the season, the status of defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli may become a question. He has done great work with the Cowboys’ defense, now entering his sixth season as coordinator, but he will turn 70 in July.

Marinelli didn’t care for questions about retirement after last season’s playoff loss to the Rams, as defensive backs coach Kris Richard takes on greater responsibility.

Lewis could replace Garrett as Cowboys’ head coach in 2020, or step in as defensive coordinator to replace Marinelli if he does retire after one more season or feels marginalized by Richard’s emergence.

On another tangent if Marinelli leaves, Lewis could be brought in as a valued assistant in Dallas under possible new defensive coordinator Richard.

Cowboys’ fans probably won’t like the idea of Lewis as a viable candidate to replace Garrett. But it’s within in the realm of possibilities several months out, and Lewis would have to consider it if the job is open.
