MLB Power Rankings: Twins take the top spot, Athletics jump skyward, Dodgers keep winning
By Sean Sears
28. Detroit Tigers, 20-32, 4th in the AL Central
The Tigers have lost three consecutive series now after being swept by the Astros this week, as the team struggles to find quality starters behind Matthew Boyd and Spencer Turnbull. Starter Gregory Soto has pitched in two games recently with Jordan Zimmerman, Tyson Ross, Matt Moore and Ryan Carpenter all on the IL, coming out with a 13.50 ERA and a bruised ego. The Tigers have a lot of role players and situational hitters doing well in moments, but with a team OPS of .671, the fourth-worst in the league combined, and a pitching staff that can’t find reliable backend starters the Tigers are in for a long season.
27. Kansas City Royals, 18-36, last in the AL Central
The Royals pitching has struggled all season. While there were a few bright spots like Brad Keller and Danny Duffy, both have struggled, with Keller posting a 6.03 ERA in his last six starts. And while relievers Ian Kennedy and Scott Barlow have been good in the backend of the bullpen, the rest of the group have an ERA above 3.00 or higher.
3B Hunter Dozier has been essentially a younger Alex Gordon, and both have been the biggest reason for the Royals offense scoring more runs as of late. Whit Merrifield, Jorge Soler and Adalberto Mondesi have all continued to improve at the plate, but in typical KC fashion, the offense starts to click right as the pitching starts to fall apart. The pieces are coming together in Kansas City, but the team is still years away from competing.
