MLB Power Rankings: Twins take the top spot, Athletics jump skyward, Dodgers keep winning
By Sean Sears
26. Toronto Blue Jays, 21-34, 4th in the AL East
Vlad Jr. finally hit his first two home runs earlier this week, as Toronto is falling in love with their top prospect and potential franchise-face. However, the Blue Jays didn’t have the greatest week overall, winning only three of their last 10 games. They did just lose starter Matt Shoemaker for the season after a torn ACL in his left knee, and he’ll join Ryan Borucki, Clay Buchholz and Clayton Richard on the IL.
Toronto traded for veteran Edwin Jackson this week to help the rotation out, but his 9.00 ERA in three starts isn’t great. The offense is 26th in runs per game at 3.83, and Eric Sogard leads the team with a .264 BA. While the 33-year-old veteran’s story has been fun to follow this season, the Blue Jays need someone like Guerrero Jr. to step in a massive way. Sadly, starters Borucki and Richard are still expected to spend more time away from the team. The Blue Jays look like a team that could be preparing to sell at the deadline this summer.
25. San Francisco Giants, 21-32, last in the NL West
Madison Bumgarner has released his list of teams he would refuse a trade to as the Giants and their former ace prepare themselves for living apart. Guys like Buster Posey and Brandon Belt have looked awful in a rather underwhelming Giants lineup, but this team is a nightmare on offense.1B Tyler Austin and corner infielder Pablo Sandoval have provided some extra hitting off the bench, but the rest of the lineup has been shells of themselves, as players like Brandon Crawford and Evan Longoria struggle to find consistency at the plate.
The Giants bullpen has some good options, but they’ll likely be moved if they retain any of their current value by the trade deadline. Guys like Will Smith, Sam Dyson, and Tony Watson all could be playing for new teams come July 31. The Giants team that won three World Series with pitching, clutch hitting, and great defense is no more, and the few remnants left on the current roster will likely be split up this summer.
