3. Philadelphia Phillies

Nick Pivetta has pitched like an ace since coming back to the starting rotation (1.80 ERA, 21:2 K/BB ratio over three starts), with Aaron Nola (4.58 ERA), Jake Arrieta (4.29) and Jerad Eickhoff (4.14) posting ERAs in the 4.00s to this point and Zack Elfin (2.88 ERA) pitching very well.

With Andrew McCutchen (torn ACL) out for the season and Odubel Herrera (administrative leave) out indefinitely, the Phillies may struggle to produce enough offensively (Jay Bruce’s hot streak since being acquired aside). Nola and Arrieta aren’t going anywhere, but unless one of them (particularly Nola) finds an ace level again soon Philadelphia should be significantly in the market for pitching.

The Phillies watched the Atlanta Braves, who are one game behind them in the NL East entering Monday, go out and get Dallas Keuchel last week when it seemed they were out of the mix to sign him. They have been here before, with Cliff Lee, Roy Halladay and Cole Hamels shaping the top of their starting rotation several years ago. A deal to add Kluber is an all-in move they may simply have to make this year if they hope to hold off the Braves.
