Carli Lloyd breaks World Cup record with absolute rocket (Video)
Jill Ellis made several changes to the USWNT lineup for the team’s second group stage game against Chile, and Carli Lloyd took full advantage of her place in the starting lineup. She has become the first player to score in six straight Women’s World Cup games.
Carli Lloyd is one of the most driven athletes on this planet, and she exhibits the very definition of “killer instinct.” Though some were surprised that Jill Ellis selected Lloyd, whose play at the club level has been rather inconsistent, to be a part of the USWNT for the 2019 Women’s World Cup, she’s clearly shown that she belongs in the lineup.
Focused and energetic as a substitute in the USWNT’s statement-making 13-0 win over Thailand, Lloyd picked up right where she left off against Chile – with a point to prove.
After coming oh-so-close to scoring in the third minute, Lloyd hammered home a wonder-goal in the 11th, once again pouncing on an opportunity and finishing with aplomb. Lloyd is one of the world’s best distance shooters, having shown that ability in the 2015 World Cup, and this was another rocket from the Sky Blue FC forward.

It’s hard to hit them any better than that, as Lloyd got every bit of that half-volley, leaving Chile’s star goalkeeper Christiane Endler no chance to parry. The technique on this strike was sublime, and it was a perfect way for Lloyd to break a record.

Lloyd is now the first player in history to score in six straight World Cup games. She only needed minutes as a substitute to strike against Thailand, and, likewise, it only took her 11 minutes to find the scoresheet with a wonder-goal against Chile.
Before the tournament began, Lloyd had her fair share of critics, but it’s safe to say she’s quickly quieted all of them. Six straight goals speaks volumes, as does a technical wonder-strike like this half-volley from the edge of the box.
