5 bold predictions for Chiefs in 2019
3. Tyrann Mathieu will galvanize the secondary
The Chiefs secondary was the weakest aspect of the team last year. Not surprisingly, the Kansas City front offense elected to make serious changes in the back-end this offseason. No transaction will affect the group more than the signing of Tyrann Mathieu.
The Honey Badger is going to do absolute wonders for this secondary. His impact may be difficult to fully capture statistically, but it will result in a much better defense. Mathieu’s ability to cover all types of wide receivers and stand up against the run is going to pay massive dividends for the coaching staff.
Mathieu will also serve as a great mentor to get Juan Thornhill up to speed in his rookie season. The former Virginia star has all the athleticism required to be a quality NFL starter. Mathieu’s versatility will allow the Chiefs to keep things simple for the rookie safety. That should allow him to have a very productive campaign.
Ultimately, the Honey Badger is going to pop up all over the field for this defense in 2019. What he lacks in stature, he more than makes up for with exceptional athleticism. The Chiefs secondary will be much improved next year, and Mathieu’s going to be right in the middle of everything.
