Women’s World Cup: 5 best moments from the semifinals
The 2019 Women’s World Cup semifinals featured two amazing games with nail-biting finishes, with the Netherlands and the United States emerging as the victors. Here were the top five moments from these two fixtures.
It took everything they had and the result could have easily went the other way, but the United States pushed past England with their third straight 2-1 victory in the knockout stages.
Getting to the final hasn’t been easy for the United States, who have been tested repeatedly after coasting in the group stages, but they remain the favorites heading into their showdown with the Netherlands.
Meanwhile, the Netherlands needed extra time to defeat a gutsy, steadily-improving Sweden side that came off of a commanding performance against Germany. The Netherlands have been one of the most exciting teams in this tournament, and their attacking trio and industrious midfield could present a unique challenge to the United States.
There were so many great moments from both semifinals games, but here are the five best.
Alex Morgan’s goal and celebration
Alex Morgan’s goal in the 31st minute proved to be the game-deciding goal, as it gave the United States a 2-1 lead 11 minutes after Ellen White equalized. Morgan’s goal also pushed her to the top of the Golden Boot race, putting her in a tie with White at six goal each, but Morgan holds the tie-breaker with three assists. She’ll also have an opportunity to add to her resume in the final against the Netherlands.

This was an excellent team goal, assisted by reigning NWSL MVP Lindsey Horan. She looped the ball into the box to the ever-presented Morgan, who wasn’t going to miss this headed opportunity. It was quite the birthday gift for Morgan, who had been busier setting up teammates for goals than scoring them during the knockout stages before this.
And how about that celebration? Having some fun and sipping some tea to celebrate her sixth goal. Anyone upset with this celebration just doesn’t understand how fun football is supposed to be. This was a wonderful moment.
