Callum Hudson-Odoi

Chelsea have appointed Frank Lampard as their new manager, which may make it more difficult for Bayern to pry promising attacker Callum Hudson-Odoi away from the London club.

Hudson-Odoi looks like the main “Plan B” option for Sane, but, of course, the 18-year-old England international is far from a consolation prize.

There are maybe only a handful of prospects in world football who are better than Hudson-Odoi. Although Maurizio Sarri frustratingly didn’t give him nearly enough chances in the starting lineup during Premier League play, Hudson-Odoi dazzled a global audience in the Europa League.

He finished the continent’s second-most prestigious tournament with the highest marks in goals plus assists per 90 (minus penalties), beating out teammate Olivier Giroud and fellow teenage sensation Kai Havertz (a Bayern target in 2020).

Hudson-Odoi could cost around 50 million euros, which is a hefty price for an 18-year-old player. But that’s the kind of value Hudson-Odoi holds to Chelsea, and his importance to the team has only increased since Hazard’s departure to Real Madrid.

Though Chelsea bought Christian Pulisic from the Bundesliga, Hudson-Odoi projects as the better player and was more successful in European competition in 2018-2019.

Bayern have shown interest in Hudson-Odoi for several months, but it seems like Chelsea are even less willing to sell now that Lampard has replaced Sarri.
