Bayern Munich: Leroy Sane and 5 other wingers to target this summer
Bayern Munich have two talented attacking players in Serge Gnabry and Kingsley Coman on either wing, but they need more help at the position if they want to reestablish themselves as a Champions League powerhouse.
Although Bayern Munich won the Bundesliga last season, their two-point lead over Borussia Dortmund didn’t give them the breathing space they are normally looking for. Winning the Bundesliga isn’t enough for Bayern. No, they want to be able to win the league convincingly.
And while they won the DFB Cup to complete the domestic double, their failure in the Champions League rendered the cup win somewhat hollow.
Bayern strive for absolute excellent. Like Real Madrid, FC Barcelona, or Manchester City, they aspire to win the treble (the league, the Champions League, and the domestic cup).
In order to rebuild their squad into dynasty capable of accomplishing this feat, they need a lot more young talent over the next handful of years.
By signing Lucas Hernandez and Benjamin Pavard, Bayern have already found the necessary reinforcements on defense to replace Mats Hummels and Rafinha.
But they’ve yet to sign at least one winger to replace legends Franck Ribery and Arjen Robben, who both left after giving all they could possibly give to the club.
While Bayern have yet to officially sign a wide player in this transfer window, they’ve shown interest in several of the world’s biggest names. Here’s a look at six players Bayern could sign at the position, with a special focus on their top target, Manchester City’s Leroy Sane.
Leroy Sane
The Manchester City star didn’t feature regularly in Pep Guardiola’s lineup by the end of the season, but he’s undoubtedly the best possible signing for Bayern Munich.
Sane is so prolific that only his teammate – a striker – Sergio Aguero averaged more goals and assists per 90 minutes (not including penalty goals) in the Premier League. Even more impressively, Sane was first in this statistic in the Champions League. Yes, above Lionel Messi.
There’s simply nothing Sane can’t do with the ball at his feet. His technical ability is unparalleled at the position. In a league filled with elite wide players like Raheem Sterling, Mo Salah, Sadio Mane, and Eden Hazard, Sane managed to stand out as the most efficient on a per 90 minute basis.
He can score from free kicks. He can create deadly chances with low crosses. He can beat fullbacks one-on-one without breaking a sweat. And he can even defend.
Sane is the most complete winger Bayern can buy, and while Manchester City have undoubtedly driven a hard bargain for a player who is still crucial to their own treble aspirations, it’d be money well-spent for Bayern.
If Sane is interested in leaving Guardiola for his home country, then Bayern will have a centerpiece star to join fellow German winger Serge Gnabry.
