Why USWNT midfielder Allie Long will get two keys to the city
Allie Long says someone broke into her Los Angeles hotel room, stealing her wedding ring and the key to New York City she received earlier this week.
You can’t take away anything from the success of the U.S. women’s soccer team — unless someone actually physically steals it.
USWNT midfielder Allie Long tweeted that someone had come into her Los Angeles hotel room and swiped her wedding ring, the key to the city given to her by New York Mayor Bill de Blasio and an undisclosed amount of cash.
Long was in L.A. for the ESPYs on Wednesday night, just hours after her and her teammates had been feted with a massive victory parade and ceremony in New York City. After the parade, the mayor presented all 23 players with symbolic keys to the city.
The 31-year-old Long, who plays her club soccer for Reign FC of the National Women’s Soccer, was staying at the Ritz-Carlton hotel after the team flew to California following the parade.
In response, de Blasio’s office assured Long, who hails from nearby Northport, N.Y., that she would get a replacement key.
Long, who is married to fellow pro soccer player Jose Batista, was thankful that her World Cup medal had been spared.
The Los Angeles Police Department said they are reviewing the hotel’s video surveillance. No arrests have been made.
The United States defeated the Netherlands 2-0 in the World Cup final this past Sunday in Lyon to capture their fourth title. A penalty kick by Megan Rapinoe and insurance goal from Rose Lavelle sealed the win for the Americans.
