Ranking the 50 most visually-appealing college football uniforms
By Zach Bigalke
LSU enjoys a look that they employ for almost every game, a tradition at home and away that is rarely bucked. The Tigers almost exclusively don white jerseys, gold pants, and gold helmets with the purple accents that complete the school colors. It is a tradition that dates back to Paul Dietzel and the 1958 national championship season in Baton Rouge.
It is a tradition that was killed for 12 years when an NCAA rule in 1983 designated white exclusively for road teams. Since the NCAA relaxed its uniform color stipulations in 1995, and the SEC followed suit by granting home teams first right of selection in 1997, LSU has only had to don a different look on a half-dozen occasions.
When they do wear something other than their classic white-and-gold look, the Bayou Bengals tend to hit home runs with their alternate efforts. The 2018 offering is a prime example, as the Tigers took the field in an all-white uniform and a helmet that changed colors from purple to gold under the Tiger Stadium lights. That uniform paid tribute to the 1918 season that went unplayed due to World War I.
Given the infrequency with which LSU deviates from its classic look, though, it must be said that there is something reassuring in being able to turn on the television and know exactly which team you are watching from week to week. That sartorial decision started by Dietzel puts LSU squarely among the best-dressed in college football.
