PGA Power Rankings: The 2019 Wyndham Championship
***The following golfers are my top 20 overall. Each golfer will be followed by their official golf world ranking (OWGR) in parenthesis.
20. Adam Hadwin – (64)
We start the PGA Power Rankings this week with 31-year-old Canadian Adam Hadwin, who will be making his first appearance in the Wyndham Championship since he T-33 in 2016, finishing at 9-under par. 2019 will be his third career trip to Sedgewood, as he T-51 in his debut in 2015. Hadwin currently sits in 41st place in the FedEx Cup standings, and a good finish this week could propel him up to the elusive top-30.
In his last action, Hadwin had some trouble with the conditions at Royal Portrush and finished T-57 at the 148th Open Championship. Before that, he had a missed cut at the Travelers Championship, sandwiched by a solo sixth at the RBC Canadian, and a solo fourth at the 3M Open. With two top-tens in his last four, Hadwin is certainly in solid form.
19. Byeong-Hun An – (55)
Benny An continues to be a mystery to me. It has long been believed around the industry that if An ever gets hot with the putter, the rest of his game will carry him to victory. However, it seems as of late though when he has been hot with the flat stack, some other facet of his game is off. He has been pretty consistent over the last couple of months with three top-20’s in his last five events, and he comes into Sedgefield off of a T-32 at the Open Championship in his last action.
This will be An’s third Wyndham Championship, and he will return after not playing last year and missing the cut in 2017. He was solid in his debut here in 2015 though, as he finished 11-under par and cracked the top-20 with a T-18 finish. An is currently 82nd in the FedEx Cup standings, and will likely be looking for a good finish to crack that top-70 to lock up at least a couple more weeks of action.
18. Joaquin Niemann – (82)
Niemann is another golfer that sits just outside the top-70 in the FedEx Cup standings, and he will be looking to bounce back off of a missed cut at the Open Championship. It was his first missed cut since the PGA Championship, and it ruined a pretty solid stretch for the 20-year-old, who notched three top-tens while making seven straight cuts in between. This will be Niemann’s second Wyndham Championship, as he T-33 in his debut last year.
17. Lucas Glover – (76)
Lucas Glover has had a really solid season, and he currently sits right at the cutoff for making the field at the TOUR Championship at 30th place in the FedEx Cup standings. After a couple of missed cuts at the U.S. Open and the Travelers Championship, Glover has regained his form, with top-20 finishes in each of his last three starts. He comes into Sedgefield Country Club off a T-20 at the Open Championship, and his best finish in this span was his T-7 at the 3M Open.
Last year was the first time Glover missed a Wyndham Championship in the last ten years, other than a withdrawal in 2012. He shot 17-under par here in 2010 for a solo seventh for his best finish, and he has finished T-28 or better in his last three trips here going back to 2015.
16. Scott Piercy – (60)
Piercy has played the Wyndham Championship sporadically over the last ten years, making five appearances total. He has missed just one cut way back in 2009, and he followed that with his best finish in 2010 when he finished T-8 at 16-under par. In his most recent action here, Piercy T-63 in 2016 and T-45 last year.
Much like Glover, Piercy is another veteran plotter having a solid 2019, and he also finds himself inside the top-30 of the FedEx Cup standings, currently in 26th place. He has missed just two cuts in all of 2019, and he comes into Sedgefield Country Club off a T-15 in his last action at the 3M Open.
