3. Indianapolis Colts

The Texans surely would prefer to send Clowney out of the AFC, to say nothing of sending him out of the AFC South at minimum so as not to see him twice a year into perpetuity. But the Colts have the cap space to take on Clowney this year and a market value multi-year deal going forward, as the biggest splash they made in free agency this year was a two-year, $24 million deal for fellow edge rusher Justin Houston.

The Colts are a team on the rise with a bright future. But with three years left on Andrew Luck’s contract, leaving aside ongoing and seemingly increasing durability concerns, an argument could be made that their window to win a Super Bowl is actually pretty narrow as currently constructed. General manager Chris Ballard could cash in some assets in a deal for Clowney, in a proverbial win-now move that also adds a future difference maker on the defensive side of the ball.

Tom Pelissero of NFL Network recently pointed to the Colts potentially being active in trade talks, with depth at a few spots they could deal from as teams call.

Again, it’s highly unlikely Houston trades Clowney within the division, but Indianapolis could make an offer which trumps all others.
