Hot seat watch, Week 1: Clay Helton and 5 coaches feeling the heat
5. Willie Taggart – Florida State
Willie Taggart’s first season with the Florida State Seminoles fell flat. It was flatter than a Diet Coke at a Dollar General that’s been sitting on the shelf of a poorly air-conditioned building unit for at least seven months and change.
At 5-7, the Seminoles did not qualify for a bowl game and they were second-to-last place in the Atlantic Division in the ACC. Taggart felt some heat last season, but the Seminoles didn’t hastily hit the eject button their tenure after one season.
They probably won’t do it after two seasons so long as Florida State doesn’t turn in a performance like last year. However, if they are like that Diet Coke sitting on the shelf of a Dollar General somewhere off the 27 near Tallahassee, then Taggart might have a short tenure.
Florida State kicks off the season with a non-conference battle against Boise State in Jacksonville. This will be a home-field advantage for the Seminoles. Boise State will offer a stiff challenge in the opening week of the season.
Should the Seminoles drop this one, the hot takes will be rolling. James Blackman has been named the starting quarterback for Florida State after edging out Wisconsin transfer Alex Hornibrook.
Blackman has experience under center for the ‘Noles. Boise State is in transition in some key spots. Taggart has no excuse in his territory not to get this one.
