28. Miami Marlins, 51-93, last in the NL East (ranked 28th last week)

With a 3-7 record over their last 10 games, the Marlins haven’t had much to play for all season. And now with their best hitter Brian Anderson fracturing a finger in his left hand, they’re just hoping they can get out of 2019 healthy. Miami has added seven players to the IL since August 27th and their lack of depth is really starting to show.

The Marlins are looking towards 2020 when top 100 prospects like RHP Sixto Sanchez, SS Jazz Chisholm, and OF Jesus Sanchez are all projected to make their MLB Debut, according to MLB Pipeline. But two players on the Marlins roster that could do a lot for their future with a strong finish to 2019 are OF Lewis Brinson and 2B Isan Diaz. Both still young and former top 100 prospects, the Marlins have MLB-ready talent coming next season and showing a turnaround at the end of the season could solidify their spot on the roster at least through the off-season.

27. Kansas City Royals, 53-92, 4th in the AL Central (ranked 29th last week)

The Royals have benefitted from an easier run of games recently, winners of six of their last 10 games, facing the Orioles, Tigers, and Marlins before starting a three-game set with the White Sox this week.

DH/OF Jorge Soler continues to smash baseballs, now with 41 home runs on the season, the 27-year-old slugger looks like a piece to build around for the future. Starter Brad Keller was shut down at the end of August after dealing with some arm fatigue, and in a lost season for Kansas City, isn’t a bad idea. The Royals aren’t a good team right now, but out of all the teams in the bottom five of our Power Rankings, they are likely the team closest to turning things around.
