4. Eric Chavez

Eric Chavez has been working in the Los Angeles’ Angels’ front office as a special assistant since 2015, and he took over as the manager of their Triple-A team at end of the 2018 season when manager Keith Johnson got bumped up to the big league staff.

Chavez has surfaced as a Major League managerial candidate in recent years. Bob Nightengale of USA TODAY even tabbed the former third baseman as the favorite to replace Mike Scioscia as Angels’ manager about year ago, before they ultimately stayed old-school and hired Brad Ausmus.

Chavez was regarded as a strong clubhouse leader during his playing career, the peak of which came with the Oakland Athletics from 1998-2010 when he won six Gold Gloves and a Silver Slugger Award.

Chavez would fit the recent mold of first-time managerial hires around MLB. He’d also be a fresh voice, with a presumed bent toward player development and an assumption he’s open to all types of analytics-driven strategy.

Chavez will almost surely be a big league manager someday. That some day may well come in 2020, in the home dugout at Petco Park.
