3. Bruce Bochy

Bruce Bochy recently got his 2,000th win as a manager, and he’s retiring as San Francisco Giants’ skipper when the season is over. But never say never, and Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune has already put Bochy on a list of interesting names on the Padres’ list of managerial candidates.

Bochy played briefly for the Padres and he was the manager for the team from 1995-2006 (including a National League pennant in 1998). He still lives in San Diego, so if there’s any job he’d postpone retirement for it might be the Padres’.

Bochy belongs in the “never know unless you try category” as the Padres launch their search for a new manager. He may politely decline any overture, or he may just be reinvigorated by the opportunity in San Diego after some down years in San Francisco to close his tenure there. Until it’s out there that Bochy has turned it down, assuming he’s a candidate, there’s some chance (at least a non-zero chance) he’ll be the Padres’ manager next year.
