Fantasy Football: Week six position by position rankings
Running Backs
Last week, a few different running backs had surprising breakout performances. 35 different backs scored double digit fantasy points in week six. Aaron Jones led all RBs with a whopping 49.2 ESPN PPR fantasy points.
The top two backs from last weeks rankings, Christian McCaffrey and Dalvin Cook, both ended up as top five plays last week. Three and four were a bit surprising, though. Josh Jacobs wound up RB3 against the Chicago Bears defense. No one expected such a big day out of Jacobs, so he was much lower in my rankings last week.
RB4 was Matt Breida after his incredible Monday night performance against the Browns. With Tevin Coleman returning to the team this week, there were many questions surrounding the fantasy value of the 49ers backfield. As our Brandon Lauderback predicted in his article on the topic, Breida was the most effective in the run game and led the team with 114 rushing yards.
Ezekiel Elliott, Nick Chubb, and James Conner failed to live up to their rankings while I was close with my ranking of Leonard Fournette, Marlon Mack, and Derrick Henry.

Christian McCaffrey is already getting his second crack at the Buccaneers this season. In his first outing vs TB, CMC struggled mightily. It was his only game under 28 PPR fantasy points this season, and I don’t think lightning will strike twice. That game was on a Thursday night and is the last game that Cam Newton was under center for Carolina. Despite a back injury limiting McCaffrey in practice this week, I think he will continue to dominate this week.
Mark Ingram is a guy that I like a lot this week. The Ravens should be able to run all over the Bengals, and if they get up early, it should be a heavy dose of Ingram to wind down the game. Le’Veon Bell is another potential top five play this week, as he gets his quarterback back, opening up the entire playbook for that offense. Chris Carson and Rashaad Penny face a Browns defense that gave up 275 rushing yards a wee ago.
A sleeper that I like this week is Adrian Peterson. Bill Callahan is taking over as the interim head coach for the Redskins this week. One of the first things I saw quoted that he said when announced in his new position was that the team needed to run the ball more. They take on the hapless Dolphins in week six. AD should be able to turn back the clocks this week if he does have anything left in the tank.
Dalvin Cook, Todd Gurley, Philip Lindsay, Jordan Howard, and whoever the Giants running back may be all have difficult matchups and I expect their performance to dip at least a bit in week six.
