The outlook of the San Francisco 49ers running backs might be more obvious than you think.

One of the trickier backfield committees so far this season, has been the San Francisco 49ers. This backfield consists of starter Matt Brieda, Jeff Wilson, and Raheem Mosert. They also will have Tevin Coleman returning very soon, which will only muddle the situation more than it already is. Upon his return, we have to imagine that one of these three men will be losing their spot, with Breida being the most secure running back.

The snap count has been very tricky among these three current backs. On the season, (via football outsiders), Breida has a 37.9% snap count, Mosert has a 35.6% snap count, with Wilson getting most of the goal line carries, and a 16.4% snap count. As mentioned, Wilson has been the go-to goal-line back, scoring four touchdowns in two games. Brieda has seen the most consistent work, with 15, 12, and 14 carries in three games, along with a few passing targets.

My prediction going forward is simple. When Coleman returns, he will go back to the similar role he had in Atlanta. Primarily a third-down role, catching short passes, running draw plays, and the occasional change of pace play. Brieda will remain the starter, he is the better runner, with 220 yards on a 38% snap count is just ridiculous. He is averaging 5.36 YPC, while Mosert is averaging a ridiculous 8.41 YPC. Raheem should remain the third running back on the team, splitting goal-line work, and most of the rushing plays with Breida. Jeff Wilson will be the odd man out despite his semi-productive work, he the worst rusher out of these three men.
