Heisman rankings Week 7: Joe Burrow makes the case to be front-runner
8. Sage Surratt, WR, Wake Forest
Week 7 was quite unfortunate overall for the Wake Forest Demon Deacons. Not only did they lose quarterback Jamie Newman, who was in Heisman consideration himself, to injury but they also lost their first game of the 2019 season, falling in a shootout to Louisville. Even in the losing effort, though, wide receiver Sage Surratt made sure that he’s getting all of the credit that he deserves for his work this season.
Surratt led the way for a Wake Forest offense that put up 59 points, catching 12 passes for 196 yards and three touchdowns. And while that’s a wildly productive day, that’s what the sophomore has been doing all year in Winston-Salem. He has 46 catches for 711 yards and nine touchdowns on the season, including three games with 150 yards or more and while scoring in every contest. It’s time to put real respect on Surratt’s name.
7. Chuba Hubbard, RB, Oklahoma State
Coming off of a disappointing loss to Texas Tech, Chuba Hubbard and the Oklahoma State Cowboys were idle in Week 7 of college football. That’s disappointing that the redshirt sophomore running back didn’t get a chance to right the ship for his team after a tough defeat but that shouldn’t diminish how good that he’s been so far this season in Stillwater.
For the season, Hubbard has been a true workhorse with 1,094 yards on 162 carries along with 13 rushing scores. While he’s not been involved much in the passing game, Hubbard has been a monster on the ground this year. If he can continue that throughout the Big 12 schedule and if Oklahoma State is able to stay competitive, it’s hard not to see Hubbard getting the love he’s due for his campaign.
