No. 5: Dave Aranda – LSU defensive coordinator

Dave Aranda just took part in dismantling Joe Moorhead’s offense. The LSU defensive coordinator’s schemes played a key role in disrupting everything that went well for the Bulldogs. He’d also be an intriguing option as a head coach to help Mississippi State move forward from Moorhead.

Aranda is arguably one of the three best defensive coordinators in college football right now. He has extensive experience leading defenses, having served as a defensive coordinator at seven different programs all across the country dating back to 2005. Aranda has been in Baton Rouge since 2016 and has been able to help oversee and direct one of the most talented rosters in the nation.

The Tigers have flourished on defense under Aranda’s direction. In 2019, the Tigers are giving up an average of just 317.5 yards per game. Since he’s been in Baton Rouge, Aranda’s defenses haven’t given up more than 338.7 yards per game. His defenses are stingy and his players are physical and active. That would be valuable for the Bulldogs to have.

Like another candidate that is on this list, Aranda has ties to talent-rich areas that are ripe for recruiting thanks to his current position. Having been in the state of Louisiana for the past few seasons, Aranda is connected to a region that is rich in talent. Mississippi State would certainly need someone who could recruit to step in as the Bulldogs’ head coach.
