NBA DFS Picks and Pivots – First Look:
We have our first big slate of the season with 11 games on tap this evening so we should not have to worry about anyone approaching the 90% ownership we saw on Anthony Davis last night in GPP play!
What is interesting to me at first glance is that we only have 4 games with 220+ game totals with the Kings and Suns leading the slate at 232.5 in what should be one of the best game environments of the night. However, sitting right below them at 225.5 is the Brooklyn Nets and Minnesota Timberwolves in what may be my favorite game to target on the night.
While it may end up being a small sample size, it is interesting to note that Minnesota was the NBA leader in team pace this preseason and will take on a Brooklyn team that ranked top 10 in the NBA in pace during the second half of last season, so this could be a spot where we get a close game (4 point spread) and a high projected pace that makes for an ideal game stack.
The story in Brooklyn is all brand new as D’Angelo Russell is now in Golden State and in comes Kyrie Irving and Kevin Durant (well, not yet) and frankly it still feels weird to type those names as members of the Nets.
Kyrie Irving ($16.4K) showed in the preseason the kind of usage monster he can be with his new team, sporting a 33.8% usage rate which was the 7th highest mark among preseason players. As much as we look to attack high pace games, we need to also recognize that Minnesota was the 2nd worst team in the second half of the regular season in terms of Def-Rtg so this could be a spot where Irving puts up a ceiling type game in his home debut. Irving has also has immense success in his matchups against opposing PG Jeff Teague, putting up 37 or more fantasy points in 8 straight games, going over 40+ in six of thise eight.
The rest of the Nets become interesting complementary pieces with Caris LeVert ($12.5K) becoming the Robin to Kyrie’s Batman until KD returns at some point. Not only is Levert the clear #2 offensive option but his ability to rack up peripheral stats gives him an immense ceiling at this price point in what should be a high scoring game environment. The other pieces like Joe Harris and Taurean Prince are likely as far as I would go in a game stack as I plan to avoid the Jarrett Allen/DeAndre Jordan platoon until we get better clarity on how it shakes out.
