5. Wake Forest Demon Deacons

Rank: 23 | Opponent: NC State Wolfpack | Time: Saturday, Nov. 2, Noon ET

After a 5-0 start to the 2019 college football season, things got a little dicey for the Wake Forest Demon Deacons prior to their idle week last Saturday. They first lost an absolute barnburner to Louisville, a team that most people believed they would be able to beat. More importantly, star quarterback Jamie Newman was injured in that matchup and missed the next game against Florida State, which the Demon Deacons survived to win, 22-20.

Newman is expected to be back on the field on Saturday as Wake Forest welcomes the NC State Wolfpack to town, so everything should be good to go, right? Well, that depends on a few things. The first is the healthy of Newman. When the dual-threat passer is at his best, the Demon Deacons offense is incredibly difficult to stop. But coming off his shoulder injury, it stands to reason that he may not be playing at 100 percent.

Furthermore, the Demon Deacons defense has not been at the level of their offense all year. They’re giving up 26.7 points per game and, while NC State is only averaging 27.0 points per game this season, their offense could be getting a spark in Week 10 as redshirt freshman quarterback Devin Leary is set to take over at quarterback for the Wolfpack. Of course, that could be a change that goes poorly for NC State but we don’t know.

The fact that we don’t know what Leary will like in addition to the fact that the Demon Deacons have no tape on the youngster creates an interesting situation, though. If Newman does show some ill effects of his injury as he returns to the field and if the defense doesn’t show up against Leary, Wake Forest could very well be staring at their second upset loss of the 2019 season.
