team. 44. . 1-7. Previous: . Atlanta Falcons. 28

Recap: It’s hard to imagine much more going wrong for a team that once again had high hopes. Dan Quinn’s club took a six-game losing streak into its off-week and then came the news that the team opted to release veteran kicker Matt Bryant. When the Falcons return to action in Week 10 at New Orleans, 12-year veteran quarterback Matt Ryan is expected to be back in the lineup. Of course, the club’s biggest issues this season have been on the defensive side of the ball and even before safety Keanu Neal went down for the year. Of course, Ryan has had his issues as well when it comes to ball security. Can the veteran signal-caller rebound in the season’s second half?

Next Week: Quinn’s club returns from their off week and plays the first of what will be five consecutive games vs. their NFC South rivals. It begins with a trip to the Big Easy to clash with the first-place New Orleans Saints, who were also off last week. Atlanta has lost three straight and owns an 8-18 record in this rivalry dating back to 2006.

Playoff hopes: The Falcons have lost six straight games and head into the second half of 2019 six games behind the first-place in the NFC South. But the team now has a chance to make up a lot of ground in their next five contests via the schedule. But there hasn’t been a hint to date that Quinn’s squad is capable of such a dramatic turnaround.

team. 31. . 2-6. Previous: . New York Giants. 27

Recap: General manager David Gettleman has been known to be active during the NFL trade deadline and last week acquired defensive lineman Leonard Williams from the New York Jets. The sixth overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft hopes to bring some life to one of the worst defensive units in the league. The Giants have allowed 17 or more points in all but one of their eight games this season. On offense, rookie Daniel Jones has had both his good and bad moments, hitting on 62.5 percent of his throws and more scored (10) than interceptions (7). But he’s also absorbed 21 sacks and lost six of his eight fumbles. The Giants entered Week 9 with a NFL-high 19 turnovers.

Next Week: The Giants will play at MetLife Stadium for the second time in seven days. But this time around, Big Blue is the road team in the latest regular-season encounter with the New York Jets. Four years ago, the Giants fell at “home” to the Jets, 23-20 in overtime. It snapped Big Blue’s five-game winning streak in this interesting series.

Playoff hopes: The Giants as well as the other three teams in the NFC East has shown any kind of consistency to date. And a win by Shurmur’s club on Monday night against rival Dallas could change the complexion of the divisional race. But Big Blue – losers of their last four contests – needs to cut down on the constant miscues.
