Fantasy Football – Quarterback

Boom: Matt Ryan, ATL vs. TB

Ryan has been the epitome of frustrating since Week 7 after starting the season strong, averaging just 11.2 fantasy points per game over that span. He was injured in one of those games, but the Falcons’ ineffectiveness in the red zone has caused Ryan to post middling fantasy scores. Still, he’s thrown for over 300 yards in all but two games this season and has taken proper care of the ball, tossing just three interceptions in his last six games combined.

This is a prime blowup spot against Tampa Bay. I picked on them last with Drew Brees as my “Boom” pick, and I’m going right back to the well as they’ve yielded a whopping 23.7 FPPG to enemy QBs, second-most in the league behind only the Arizona Cardinals. Ryan will still likely be without emerging tight end Austin Hooper, but that won’t matter here. Atlanta is currently rolling, making Matty Ice a top play this week.

Honorable Mention: Sam Darnold (NYJ vs. OAK), Jacoby Brissett (IND @ HOU)

Bust: Jimmy Garoppolo, SF vs. GB

Jimmy G has caught fire in recent weeks, rifling nine touchdowns over his past three games. The problem? Eight of those came in two separate games against the Cardinals in Weeks 9 and 11. It’s been hit-or-miss for Garoppolo this season, who’s gone for 13 or fewer fantasy points in six games to this point with three games over 22.5 points. With both pass-catchers Emmanuel Sanders and George Kittle ailing, life becomes much tougher for Garoppolo when he’s not playing against a bottom-feeding defense.

Statistically, Green Bay poses his toughest test yet, ranking as a top-10 team in both passing yards and passing touchdowns allowed. An area the Packers have been susceptible to, however, is opposing rushing attacks. They’ve been gashed on the ground to a tune of 126.9 yards per game, ninth-most in the league. Look for the Tevin Coleman and the Niners’ stable of running backs to be busy in this one, taking most of the pressure off of Jimmy G’s shoulders.

Dishonorable Mention: Tom Brady (NE vs. DAL),  Daniel Jones (NYG @ CHI)

Sleeper: Jeff Driskel, DET @ WSH

Driskel has performed admirably filling in for Matthew Stafford thus far, keeping his team in both games against the Bears and Cowboys. His 27.5 fantasy points last week gave him a top-5 finish at the quarterback position, displaying his mobility with 51 rushing yards and a score. He gets the Redskins this week, who just allowed Sam Darnold over 25 points.
